I'm Sadhika, and on my first blog, Dregs of Yore, I dive into a wide array of topics—from music, TV, and book recommendations to reflections on religion, philosophy, personal anecdotes, and occasional political rants. Known for my ever-changing hobbies, I juggle about fifty abandoned interests with a handful of active pursuits. Much like me, my blog is all over the place. To this repertoire, I now bring a new category — home and hearth.

The Vision Behind this Blog

I see women not as the oppressed creatures chained to the stove by corrupt systems, but more optimistically. Historically, women have been agents of economic activity, taking seventy percent of consumer decisions and driving demand.

The home and kitchen is not our prison, but our kingdom. We rule the private sphere. On this blog, I'm committed to preserving the legacy of homemaking passed on to us by our mothers and grandmothers. It cannot be allowed to die, not yet, while I carry the flaming baton.

It's a mundane Thursday, where time seems to drag on and you feel a bit disconnected. The weather matches the mood — cloudy skies without a drop of rain. Thankfully, I found some fresh cherries in the fridge, though they were only mildly sweet for this time of year. Inspired, I whipped up a delightful cherry preserve.   Homemade preserves might sound like something only grandmothers with vast cellars and an abundance of mason jars can pull off, but trust me, this recipe is as easy as pie—cherry pie, to be precise! Ingredients: 2 to 3 cups of fresh cherries  4 tbsp jaggery powder (depends on the sweetness of your cherries, no pun intended) 2 tbsp chia seeds 1 tsp lemon juice Instructions: Soak the cherries in water for a good 20 mins. I like to sprinkle a pinch or two of salt in this water. My grandma said this helps to draw out the bugs and removes pesticides as well.  Drain the water, and wash and pit the cherries. Winter has always felt like a long, drawn-out test of endurance—a season that seeps into your bones and makes you question why anyone would willingly live through it. The days shrink, the sun turns shy, and there’s a quiet loneliness in the cold that creeps into the house no matter how tightly the windows are shut. Cooking in winter is less about recipes and more about survival—about finding warmth where you can.  And that’s what got me through this winter — cooking this Pepper Chicken Curry in the dead of winter, when the world outside was brittle and sunless. It’s the kind of dish that clears the fog inside you—the sharp bite of black pepper rising up through your throat, curling into your sinuses, and forcing the winter out, like it’s wringing the cold from your very bones. Air-fried Thekua

Let me introduce you to thekua, a North-Indian treat that’s like the doughnut’s quirky, rustic cousin. Where doughnuts are perfectly round, fluffy, and usually smothered in icing, thekua is charmingly imperfect, slightly crumbly, and rich with the flavours of jaggery and ghee .  Though thekua wasn't a staple in my Kumaoni household, as it's a delicacy from states like UP and Bihar, I first encountered it thanks to a friend. In Uttar Pradesh, young people often leave their villages or hometowns to move to bigger cities in pursuit of jobs or higher education. After every visit back home, they return laden with homemade goodies like namkeen, chivda, laddu, and thekua. This heartwarming tradition brings a taste of home to those far from it.
